Turning my HOBBY into a CAREER

The Big Event held on October 12th, is a Big Brother Big Sister of Southeast Michigan annual charitable fundraiser held at The Reserve in Birmingham.  I was the guest of its CEO and President Madame Dara Munson, whom I had the pleasure of styling for this event.  Myself, along with several hundred of metro Detroit's philanthropic society and media celebs had a fantastic time partying to the sounds of the band Hot Sauce and enjoyed a delicious New Orleans themed menu.

Keeping with the "Big Easy Style" theme I wanted Ms. Munson's look to be appropriately festive.  This was a BIG deal for me as she was my first official client, this was a BIG event for her so she had to look amazing, and I had only 2 weeks to put it all together.

The dress is of course an essential item of any ensemble but for me the accessories are what takes something from being an outfit to A LOOK!  When I saw the earrings I selected for her at              The Black Dress I fell in love, so everything else (Jewelry, bag, shoes, belt) had to fall in line.

This is what I came up with

A Love Supreme

A Real Life Sex in the City Story........

Only this story happens in Washington, D.C. where the ratio of available men to women is 1 to 1,000.  My sister Nafeesah (Charlotte) the consummate lady in every way, who never leaves home without a fascinator, perfect poise and Virgo perfection.  In this story she is an art teacher who is as passionate about her gift as she is about her students, however there was something missing.  She longed to be a Mrs. and the chance to put some of her stern instruction that she reserved for summers with her niece and nephew to use on her own children.

So as fate would have it, Nafeesah found herself at yet another happy hour in a crowded D.C. hot spot with her regular crew of fellow teachers and administrators.  Rubbing elbows with all the "movers and fakers", where the odds of finding a Prince Charming are slim to none.  This evening the odds were in her favor.

Nicholas was there celebrating one of his fraternity brothers birthday in the VIP section doing what self-proclaimed bachelors do.....chillin.  He certainly had a type and Nafeesah did not look the part, however when she crossed his path he was taken.  Intrigued by her striking beauty, confident stride, bald head held high, and signature smile that he later found out came from her mother.  He had to say something, but all he could do was stare for what seemed like an eternity.  When he finally offered his hand and she rescued him with a smile and a warm hello they found out they had more in common than the same initials.  They were both teachers from the Midwest, belonged to Greek organizations, loved their dogs, and fancy pizza.

Nick met her family for the first time about 6 months after he met Nafeesah. After a few heated games of finger wrestling her nephew proclaimed "I want you to be my uncle!"  We all looked away and tried to talk over the innocent little 7 year old, changing the subject, while giving him the "it's too soon for this" eye.

The rest is urban fairytale history and the following are the pictures that accompany this story. Enjoy!

In typical Carrie Bradshaw fashion, I of course am uber excited about helping plan this wedding and serving as Maid of Honor.  My daughter is even more excited as this is her first opportunity to lend her support as junior wedding planner.  In an effort to foster her entrepreneurial spirit and encourage her future wedding planning endeavors I took her to a Bridal show recently.  In the midst of getting ideas and in between the "oooh that's cute" we were able to squeeze in a few photo booth shoots and the following is what we came up with!

In between goofy photo booth ops we met one half of the Bombshell Bridal Boutique team.  This boutique located in St. Clair Shores, MI specializes in dresses for curvy girls.  When the owner was disappointed in the selections available when shopping for her own wedding gown, she did what any fashionista with a Business degree would do....she opened a boutique and filled the void!

Fitness is ALWAYS fashionable

My Journey........

There is a whole lot that goes with this story before I got to this current chapter in my life. What moved me to write this blog entry was fashion....what else!

So I was at Macy's and I found THEE perfect deep blue palazzo pants BCBG jumpsuit with an open back in a silk blend, that just flowed effortlessly.  I didn't need it, didn't have anywhere to wear it, but it would be PERFECT for something. Thinking....let me try her on.  It fit perfectly but there was one small defect, I would have to wear a scuba suit underneath to keep my delicious womanness under control ;-). Don't get me wrong Spanx are a necessary evil when you want to have a smooth finish but if you wear undergarments that totally reshape your body i.e. Body Magic, well that's another story.
This was my first MESSAGE!

The next message I received was in my kickboxing class with Mary Jo at Bad Boy Gym http://www.badboygym.net  where I literally leave a pool of me on the gym floor.  It is so intense! Just imagine Kickboxing to Detroit House Music sped up to like 16 BPM! I love to sweat so I love her class, but I was thinking....why do I workout so hard but the scale just won't budge.  It is probably due to my love of all things crispy, bready, and starchy. I made up in my mind something has to change!

This is where my workout fairy God-mothers come in......the one seen below is my "workout BFF". When the gym regulars see me without her, their first question is "Where is your BFF?"
I call her Jillian, she pushes me to do things I would never do on my own...namely running, push-ups, mountain climbers, squat thrusts....I could go on. Its funny how you meet people at work that you have absolutely nothing in common with, but when you take the time to get to know them you find that we are all the same.  She was placed in my life to get me to my goal weight by my upcoming milestone birthday.

Next up is A-Train, seen below.....
She is a powerhouse woman who could put most 20-somethings to shame.  I met her about 2 years ago at the gym and she was just like me. Working out, not really seeing the results until she started running and changing her diet.  She has run several half marathons, she teaches boot camp classes at Better Life Fitness http://www.betterlifefitnesscenter.com/. She is my inspiration for what 40 should look like. Armed and dangerous!

I talked to both of them about my goal to look flawless in that BCBG jumpsuit and A-Train put together a plan she calls "Go Hard or Go Home".  It is an eating plan that eliminates all the good stuff of course but it works! I have been following it religiously for 3 weeks and even lost a few pounds.

I shared the plan with my circle of friends and family.  My BFF and right hand Toni, always willing to try whatever craziness I'm into, said "Lets do this!"

Toni and I at the Riverwalk with Run this Town

In addition to changing our diets we decided to join a running group called Run this Town https://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/groups/runthistowndet/   They meet every Tuesday @ 6 p.m. at the RiverWalk and Saturday @ 10 a.m. They call it "networking out", think of it as happy hour only with water and alot of sweat.  They socialize, network, laugh for about 30 minutes, stretch, run/power walk to the Joe Louis stairs...PAUSE....if you make it from one end of those stairs to the other you can do anything! Then we run/ power walk back to a cheering RTT crowd of the most encouraging, motivating, and inspiring group of people Detroit has to offer!

Candice, pictured below pulled me in when I was at the Riverwalk one morning killing some time.

She is a boat load of high energy and good vibrations

Me running my OWN race...trying to obtain MY personal best.  RTT Philosophy

There has been a surge in talk about fitness and eating healthy on FB amongst my friends and former high school classmates as we approach a very important milestone within the coming year.  This sparked the creation of a FB group that is yet another source of encouragement, well wishes and tips on how to help all of us get to our goal. My hope is that by reading this you become inspired in some way to get up and move and make better food choices so next time you don't have to rely so much on the Spanx or dare I say wear a bathing suit without a cover-up! Those are my goals...

Here are a few things that may help you along the way.

Tiffany the Trainer!

Hands down the best personal trainer in S.E. Michigan.  No brow beating here, but she is still tough.   She is offering a fall special right now until November 1st, so if you need help reaching your goals, give her a call!

Michigan Fash Fest!

This is a big month for fashion everywhere! All the designers are unveiling their fall lines, NY Fashion Week, Fashion Night Out, and the 1st Annual Michigan Fash Fest.
It has also been a big month for me as I celebrate 1 month of blogging and almost 3,000 views in that time! I attended Fash Fest last night, a runway industry showcase featuring local up and coming designers in an effort to attract industry and retail buyers.

This three-day event has been created by Presence II Productions, a Michigan based, woman-owned company, founded by CEO, Leslie Ann Pilling, whose passion is to outreach to her community, both through her partnership with local charity Forgotten Harvest, and her dedication to boosting an economic redirection in the state of Michigan.

I was excited (per usual) about 3 things last night:

1.) I wanted to rock a new look....well new for ya'll
2.) I couldn't wait to meet my new fashion blogger sisters in real life.
3.) The Fotoula Lambrose showcase

"I AM NOT MY HAIR"

As of late I have been a little bored with my hair, even toying with the idea of cutting it all off.  You see, I get bored easily and I am always looking for something fresh and new.  I think I've had every hair style trend known to man except for the dreaded Jheri curl. One day I may blog about my hair journey, that would be funny! Ok back to the point....one of my sisters always wraps her hair so beautifully. Her creations look like art.  Here is my first little attempt....

My sister wrapped my hair for my Fash Fest look last night....I was going for the Queen Latifah "U.N.I.T.Y" meets Beyonce "Freak em dress" look last night. LOL!

How would you wear?

I recently received the following question via Facebook..

How would you wear these powder blue skinny jeans in the Fall?

Take a look at what I came up with...This is how I would do maternity on the weekends.  I selected a few options, all budget-friendly ofcourse. Let me know what you think in the comments section.  My favorite is the High-Low New York top from Forever 21.
